Exams - Check the universities' web sites to see which exams they require.

Most US schools require the SAT I (Reasoning) or the ACT and the TOEFL.
The most competitive schools in the US require the SAT I (Reasoning) or ACT and require two SAT II (Subject tests). Canadian universities require the TOEFL.

    It measures your academic knowledge which you have acquired over the years of formal education. Foreign students tend to do better on the ACT than the SAT.

Schools that don't necessarily require SAT or ACT are www.fairtest.org.They tend to be less competitive institutions. See the endnotes on this web site after the list of schools to note the restrictions.

Common Application

The common application is used by over 300 universities (though not all) universities.

Common essay questions/Personal Statement requests tend to be minumum of 250 words and include topics such as:

  • Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you.
  • Discuss some issue of personal, local, national, or international concern and its importance to you.
  • Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence.
  • Describe a character in fiction, a historical figure, or a creative work (as in art, music, science, etc.) that has had an influence on you, and explain that influence.
  • A range of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the educational mix. Given your personal background, describe an
    experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community, or an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you.
  • Topic of your choice.
